Kambo is known as “the vaccine of the forest” and is one of the most powerful, natural antibiotics and anesthetics found in the world.  It is one of the most effective ways to reset and empower our immune systems.

Kambo is a traditional medicine used by many indigenous communities located in the Northwestern part of the Amazon Rainforest, namely Colombia and on the border between Brazil and Peru. Kambo is found in nature in the form of a waxy, poisonous secretion, which is collected from the green Phyllomedusa Bicolor frog.

The Kambo frog is highly revered by the indigenous communities, and for this reason it is freed unharmed after the collection of the secretion.

Scientific research conducted since the 1980s shows that Phyllomedusa bicolor poison is made up of many peptides (short chains of amino acids) that are beneficial to the human body. The peptides substances Dermorfine and Deltorfine are analgesic and strengthen the immune system provoking the destruction of pathogenic microorganisms. Additionally, the antibiotic properties of the frog secretion strengthen the immune system through the body’s production of antibodies against the poison.

Kambo is traditionally known to be anti-inflammatory, to relieve joint pain, to heal eyesight, to ease pain and its peptides are reported to cover a wide range of potential medical uses, e.g.:

  • treatment of brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
  • depression
  • migraines
  • blood circulation problems
  • vascular insufficiency
  • organ diseases
  • skin and eyes issues
  • cancer
  • fertility problems in women
  • AIDS
  • Candida
  • Hepatitis
  • Herpes and more.

Kambo enters the lymphatic system, waking up the body’s natural ability to heal itself. There is also, due to its purgative effect, an obvious process of detoxification of the liver (usually one vomits up bitter bile) of intestine (through evacuations) and of the entire digestive system.

However, to the indigenous Amazonian communities, the main cause for taking Kambô is to fight ‘panema’. ‘Panema’ means sadness, lack of luck, irritation or ‘bad aura’ and has been re-interpreted as ‘depression’ by urban therapists. Kambo therefore washes away any negative physical and mental energies which deny us a balanced and peaceful life and are at the core of a broad spectrum of diseases.

The main purpose of Kambo is, therefore, to establish a spiritual ‘management chock’ in the life of people, a ‘chakra realignment’, a mark for organic and psychological reorganization, from which the person changes attitude and intended future patterns of health (such as quitting smoking).

International scientific research, on the pharmaceutical and chemical areas, have been made on the properties of Kambo since the 80´s. The peptides substances Deltorfine and Dermorfine today are synthetically produced by pharmaceutical laboratories. Italian, French and Israelis researchers already entered with a request for the patent of dermorfine application. More recently, the University of Kentucky (USA) is searching (and patenting) deltorfine in collaboration with pharmaceutical company Zymogenetics. Several international laboratories are already interested in the venom of the Kambo to develop a drug that can lead to the cure of cancer.

The Kambo practitioner burns the skin of the patient (usually arms or legs) several times with a piece of ember vine, opening small holes in the skin (called points). The application of the resin diluted in water is carried over the skin and moves quickly to the entire body by the lymphatic vessels.

The amount of points (usually in odd number) through which the poison will be introduced (with a wood spatula), depends on physical stature, the number of times that the person has already used Kambô, the reason for the application and assessment of the applicator, based on their knowledge.

A typical Kambo group ceremony lasts 3-4 hours (private sessions last about 2 hours). The time spent in the peak of the cleansing and purgative process can be as short as 10 minutes and as long as a couple of hours.

Kambo is a very physical experience which involves a feeling of heat in the body usually followed by vomiting and sometimes evacuating from the intestines as the body purges toxins from the various organs. Once the Kambo is applied to the skin, it enters the body via the lymphatic system. The heart then fires off, the blood flows accelerated through the veins, blood pressure rises or falls a bit, the person gets dizzy or nauseous. Some people see all white, as if the world were covered by a diffuse fog. You may also be feeling an electrical current through the skin itching the body. It is a common experience that the throat and/ or face swells, appearing to be similar to a frog. Then, suddenly, the body reacts to the substance and put everything out. Strong vomit and diarrhea are the most common responses. After your purge, the Kambo dots will be removed from your body and little by little, the senses are back to normal.

The short-term effects of receiving a treatment can be enhanced resistance to tiredness, hunger and thirst, enhanced state of alertness and sense of lightness, capacity to focus and still the mind. These effects can last for days or weeks. Long-term, Kambo will strengthen and empower the immune system, help overcome fatigue and increase overall well-being. People that regularly take the vaccine very rarely get sick and have a lot of energy.

On a spiritual level, Kambo works with your intention and what is most needed in the moment. Upon receiving it, the medicine scans your body and goes where it’s most needed. Working with the Frog Spirit is a very personal relationship and will vary every time, depending upon your intention and what the spirit is calling for.

During the treatment you are encouraged to relax into the experience and to work with your breath: Inhale and receive the medicine with love and trust, exhale and surrender. Simply relax into the sensations and allow the ally of the Kambo Spirit to purify and fortify you.

It is important to take responsibility for the messages the Spirit of Kambo shares with you during and after your sessions. The effect of Kambo can be strong and can bring about deep emotional and physical processes for some days after the session.
